THE HEARTBEAT: THE REPORT GOT IT WRONG 💓
A national ranking this week called Croydon one of London's unfriendliest boroughs. We read the same data, and we see something different.
The National Conversation, using the Government's Community Life Survey 2024/25, placed Croydon 19th of London's 32 boroughs for community connectedness, with a Connection Barometer score of 38 out of 100, and 196th of 296 English local authorities.
The headline figure: 47.5% of residents say they are proud to live here, below the England average of 59.7%. Trust in neighbours sits at 32.1%. We are not going to argue with those numbers.
But the same survey tells a story the headline missed.
81.3% of Croydon residents say people from different backgrounds get on well in their area, above the England average of 80.6%.
36.3% of residents took part in civic life in the past year, above the England average of 33.6%.
And loneliness in Croydon runs below the national average, at 5.7% compared with 6.6% across England.
That is the Croydon we know. A borough where different backgrounds already get on. A borough where people show up and take part. A borough where isolation runs lower than the national picture suggests.
The report measured Croydon through statistics. We see Croydon through what happens every day: neighbours chatting on our high streets, community groups filling halls, local businesses keeping the town alive, and 36.3% of us getting involved in civic life.
That is exactly why Croydon Local Pulse exists. Every event we share, every business we spotlight and every community win we celebrate is the connection the report says we lack, being built in real time.
Croydon is not unfriendly. Croydon is where London's next chapter is being written, together.

DID YOU KNOW? CROYDON TRIVIA 🧐
Croydon helped launch the age of air travel.
Croydon Airport at Waddon was the world's first purpose built passenger airport when it opened in 1920, and it went on to become London's main international gateway. That is world changing history, right on our doorstep.
September begins tomorrow, and Croydon is already showing what a connected borough looks like. See you then.
