🏛️ THE HEARTBEAT: HAVE YOUR SAY ON COUNCIL TAX SUPPORT

Croydon Council is consulting residents on changes to its Council Tax Support scheme, which reduces the Council Tax bill for households on lower incomes. The questions cover several options, including reducing the maximum award for certain groups, among them households receiving a disability benefit who are not working, lone parents with a child under five, and other working-age claimants. It also asks about income allowances, savings limits, a Council Tax band cap, a hardship fund and a transition period for any changes.

The consultation closes on 10 November. You can respond online on the consultation page. Inside Croydon notes that you need to confirm your email address after submitting, or your response will not be counted. South Norwood Community Kitchen has also published a guide to the consultation questions for anyone who would like help working through them. For the full detail of what is being proposed, please read the consultation page itself.

🏰 Croydon's wartime evacuees at Waddesdon Manor. During the Second World War, more than 100 nursery-age children from Croydon were evacuated to the Rothschild family's Waddesdon Manor in Buckinghamshire, where they spent time in the gardens and helped with Dig for Victory. The story is told for the first time in a display called 1939-1945: A House Interrupted, which runs until 29 November and is free with grounds admission (£14 for adults, £7 for ages 5 to 18). Do you know someone who was evacuated from Croydon, or a family story from those years? Tell us and we may share it in a future issue. Source: Inside Croydon

💡 DID YOU KNOW?

Croydon Almshouses, described as the oldest charity in the borough, was founded in 1447 by Elis David (also written Elias Davy), a London merchant. That is earlier than the Whitgift Almshouses in the town centre, which are a separate charity. Since 1 October the charity has also run St Saviour's Court in Purley, which has 53 flats, alongside the 57 flats at Elis David Almshouses in Waddon. Source: Inside Croydon
