Preview: Icon Kitchens welcomes Croydon food fans, a new housing plan targets temporary accommodation, and your Friday to Sunday table is set with markets, music, family fun and food.

Croydon’s Friday table is open, the weekend is buzzing, and today’s local pulse brings you food, drink, community events and a major housing update.

🍳 TODAY: ICON KITCHENS OPEN DAY

The Icon Kitchens Open Day runs today, Friday 25/09/2026, from 12:00 to 18:00 at 116 Brighton Road, Purley CR8 4DB, with showroom displays, refreshments and networking.

JK Curry King will be cooking at the event. Meet JK Curry King on Instagram. Details supplied by Icon Kitchens.

🏠 HOUSING: A NEW FOUR YEAR PLAN

Croydon Council has approved its Temporary Accommodation Strategy 2026 to 2030, setting out plans to prevent homelessness, reduce temporary accommodation and help more families move into settled homes.

At the end of June 2026, 3,283 Croydon households were living in temporary accommodation. The council aims to reduce this to fewer than 2,600 by 2030, bring nightly paid placements below 1,000, and deliver around £10 million in savings between 2027 and 2030.

More than 8,600 households are waiting for social housing, while around 680 social homes become available each year. The strategy includes earlier intervention, support to help people remain in existing homes, work with landlords, longer term leases, greater use of council controlled homes and action to reduce the cost of around 1,500 high cost placements.

The council says Croydon achieved the largest reduction in temporary accommodation numbers of any London borough during 2025, ended the use of commercial hotels and bed and breakfast accommodation for families, and helped more than 300 households move from temporary accommodation into social housing.

❝

“There is no quick or easy solution to the housing crisis. Councils are supporting more families, whilst having fewer affordable homes available to meet that need. We have to be realistic about the scale of that challenge, but that does not mean accepting the situation as it is.

“Temporary accommodation provides an important safety net, but it cannot be the long term answer. We need to intervene as early as possible, making the best use of the homes available and help people find a more settled housing solution.

“We have already made progress, but now we need to go further. This strategy is about building on that progress and doing everything within our power to tackle homelessness, whilst delivering the best possible value for Croydon residents.”

Jason Perry, Executive Mayor of Croydon

💡 DID YOU KNOW? CROYDON'S FIRST RAILWAY

Croydon's railway story began when the London and Croydon Railway opened in 1839, running from London Bridge to a terminus that is now West Croydon station. Much of the line was built along the route of the former Croydon Canal, which closed in 1836 to make way for the railway.
