🛍️ THE HEARTBEAT: FIVE £10,000 EMPTY SHOP GRANTS STILL UP FOR GRABS
Croydon Council has handed five businesses £10,000 each to bring an empty shop back into use. That is half of the ten grants set aside in March under the Croydon Means Business programme, so up to five could remain. Funding is limited and not every application will succeed.
To qualify, you need to be a micro or small independent business, not a chain or franchise, with a lease secured or close to it. At least half your employees must live in Croydon, works must start within a month of the money arriving, and you will need three itemised quotes. The grant covers fit-out and refurbishment only, not rent or wages.
How to apply: email a short expression of interest to the council's Business Concierge team at [email protected], saying what you do, which unit you want and what the grant would pay for. If you are about to sign a lease, get in touch before you sign.
There is also a shop front improvement grant of up to £5,000. The council says it is open to independent businesses based in Croydon, but the programme's own website says South End traders only, so ask the concierge team before you spend on quotes.
