Good morning, Croydon!
We are kicking off the week with a mix of high-court victories, high-stakes investments, and the return of the big screen to our streets. Whether you are a tennis fan or just glad to see the back of those LTN barriers, there is a lot to talk about over your morning coffee today. The pulse of our borough is beating faster than ever as we head into a scorching summer of sport and community spirit.
✨ GEORGE STREET GLOW UP
🚶 George Street and Dingwall Road have had a proper glow up, with safer crossings, fresh paving, new trees, extra seating, festoon lighting, and smoother links between East Croydon station and the town centre as part of Croydon’s wider £40 million regeneration programme.
🗣️ Executive Mayor Jason Perry said the upgrades will make the area safer, greener, and more welcoming for residents, visitors, and businesses. It is a big boost for one of the borough’s busiest gateways.
🎬 CRO‑LLYWOOD IS OFFICIALLY A THING
🎥 Executive Mayor Jason Perry has launched the CRO‑llywood Working Group, building on Croydon’s growing reputation as a filming hotspot after productions including Batman, The Crown, and Taylor Swift at Whitgift.
🎬 The group brings together film industry leaders and educators to create jobs, skills, and training routes for local people in film and TV. Back it if you want more homegrown talent stepping onto big sets from right here in the borough.
LTN BARRIERS DOWN
⚖️ In a landmark High Court ruling, Mr Justice Pepperall has declared Croydon’s Low Traffic Neighbourhoods unlawful. The court found that the dominant motive for making these schemes permanent was revenue generation from fines, not traffic management or environmental goals.
🛑 This means the six permanent LTN schemes across Addiscombe, Broad Green, and South Norwood are being quashed. The council now faces the monumental task of removing barriers and potentially refunding millions in Penalty Charge Notices issued since 2020.

THE WHITGIFT REBOUND
🏫 The 430-year-old John Whitgift Foundation is proving its commitment to our future with a massive £40 million investment. Despite recent school closures, the foundation has secured planning approval for a major expansion at Trinity School in Shirley.
🏗️ This ambitious project includes a new Sixth Form block and a fitness suite to support the school’s transition to being fully co-educational by 2027. It is a visionary move that ensures Croydon remains a top destination for world-class education and sporting excellence.
A23 ROADWORKS RUMBLE
🚗 Commuters take note, as the next phase of the Streatham Hill bus corridor improvements kicks off today. The A23 will see full overnight closures between Christchurch Road and Sternhold Avenue on 29/06/2026.
🚧 Expect lane reductions and one-way traffic systems through August as TfL works to improve our transport links. We recommend using the Southern Rail or Thameslink services from East Croydon to bypass the inevitable queues on the London Road.
NORBURY SAYS NO
🎰 Residents and faith groups in Norbury are stepping up their fight against a proposed 24/7 gambling venue. The community is protesting the conversion of the old NatWest bank at 1393 London Road into an adult gaming centre.
🏘️ With 31 betting terminals already within a stone’s throw, the Resistance Kitchen and local campaigners are demanding the high street remains family-focused. They are calling on everyone to back their petition to protect the character of our local shopping parades.
BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT: UNDISCOVERED TALENT UK (UTUK)

🎤 Meet the local powerhouse behind those electric pop-ups at Surrey Street Market. Undiscovered Talent UK (UTUK) is the heartbeat of our local creative scene, providing a vital platform for Croydon’s singers, dancers, and creators.
🔥 Their recent World Cup-themed talent showcase proved that our borough is absolutely brimming with raw potential. By giving young people a voice and a stage, UTUK is helping to build a more vibrant and confident community for everyone.
✨ Whether you are a performer looking for a break or a fan of live music, their events are a must-visit for anyone who loves local culture. Support them at the market and witness the stars of tomorrow performing right here on our historic streets.

CROYDON YOUTH AWARDS
A town is only as strong as the next generation it invests in.
By Ben Selvaratnam - CBA
It was a privilege to support and attend the Croydon Youth Awards celebrating young people who are making a real difference across our borough through leadership, resilience, creativity and community spirit.
At the Croydon Business Association CIC, we believe business has a responsibility that goes beyond profit. We should be creating opportunities, opening doors and backing young people as they develop into tomorrow's entrepreneurs, professionals and community leaders.
A huge congratulations to everyone involved in organising such an inspiring evening. We're proud to have played our part and we look forward to supporting even more initiatives that invest in Croydon's future.

🌿 Today, the Wandle Trail is a peaceful haven for walkers and cyclists. It is a perfect hidden gem for a quiet Monday evening stroll to escape the hustle and bustle of the town centre.
