🏆 THE HEARTBEAT: COULSDON HOMES WIN THE UK'S TOP ARCHITECTURE PRIZE
A Croydon housing scheme has won the RIBA Stirling Prize 2026, the UK's most prestigious architecture award. Lion Green Road in Coulsdon, designed by Mary Duggan Architects with RUFF Architects, was named the winner on Thursday 15/10/2026 at a ceremony at Old Billingsgate in London.
The development has 157 homes across five blocks, linked by shared green spaces. The judges praised it as a welcoming, inclusive place where neighbours can connect with each other and with nature, and Dezeen notes it is only the fourth housing scheme to win in the prize's 30-year history.
Locals may know the estate as Red Clover Gardens. RIBA describes it as council-commissioned, while Inside Croydon reports it was built on a former council car park for Brick by Brick, the council's former housing company, whose financial legacy remains a live issue in the borough. Whatever your view, it is a big moment for Coulsdon.

🏺 Surrey Street Market is 750 years old. Croydon's famous street market traces its roots to a royal charter obtained in 1276 by Archbishop Robert Kilwardby, who saw a market as a way to boost the income of his lands around the town. A Saturday market granted in 1343 later grew into the daily market that still trades today. Source: Inside Croydon

📰 NEWS AND NOTES
🚋 The Daily Commute: trams to New Addington are due back today, but half-term brings a bigger closure. TfL said normal service on the Sandilands to New Addington branch was expected to resume at the start of service this morning, so check before you travel. Then, from Saturday 24/10/2026 to Friday 06/11/2026, there will be no trams between East Croydon and New Addington, Elmers End or Beckenham Junction while TfL carries out track renewal. Works will run 24 hours a day, replacement buses will be in place, and TfL is timing most of the work for half-term when demand is lower. 🪵 SOMETHING DIFFERENT: SEASONED LOGS FROM URBAN LOGS
With the evenings drawing in and the forecast turning damp, it is log burner and fire pit season. Urban Logs is a Croydon business supplying air-dried, locally sourced hardwood firewood from its saw mill at Central Nursery, Conduit Lane, Croydon CR0 5RQ.
The logs are seasoned for at least six months and are Woodsure certified, which means a moisture content below 20%, so they burn cleaner and hotter. As well as firewood for stoves, the range includes kindling, firestarters and wood for cooking and outdoor fire pits. Prices at the time of writing were £85 for a large bag of ash and £80 for a large bag of mixed hardwood, with kindling at £7.99.
Delivery is free to selected South London postcodes on orders over £50, and there is a £5 refundable deposit on each bag as part of a bag reuse scheme. The business was started by a former firefighter, and customers praise the courtesy call ahead and the delivery right to the log store. It shows a 5.0 rating from 209 Google reviews on its website.
