🏗️ THE HEARTBEAT: WESTFIELD NOW WANTS UP TO 4,000 FLATS AND A DATA CENTRE
Fifteen years after Westfield first promised to transform the Whitgift Centre, its owner Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield has unveiled a very different plan for the heart of town. The new masterplan proposes 3,000 to 4,000 homes, up from the 1,000 approved in 2018, alongside a data centre, shops, food and leisure space, a public square and a concert venue.
The tallest buildings would be four blocks of 30 to 45 storeys along Wellesley Road, with three towers of 15 to 25 storeys in the middle of the site and lower buildings stepping down towards the conservation area. URW bought the Whitgift Centre freehold for £31.5 million in July and says it plans to submit a planning application in early 2027.
Not everyone is impressed: some councillors have called the scheme "underwhelming" and warned it risks turning the town centre into a "dormitory town". You can have your say, as the next public consultation opens on Thursday 08/10/2026.

💡 DID YOU KNOW? SOUTH NORWOOD HAS A GARDEN NAMED AFTER A PUNK
Sensible Garden, on South Norwood High Street opposite the old Stanley Tech, is named after Captain Sensible of The Damned, who went to school there and later sang about the borough in his song "Croydon". Former councillor Stuart Collins and a team of volunteers have just given it a clean-up and a bright orange bench, ready for a re-opening on Saturday 24/10/2026 to mark 50 years of punk.
