🚋 THE HEARTBEAT: HALF THE TRAM NETWORK SHUTS FOR TWO WEEKS FROM 24 OCTOBER
First the good news: the line between Reeves Corner and Wandle Park is due to reopen tomorrow, Thursday 08/10/2026, restoring direct trams between East Croydon and Wimbledon.
Now the bad: TfL has confirmed that from Saturday 24/10/2026 to Friday 06/11/2026 there will be no trams between East Croydon, New Addington, Elmers End and Beckenham Junction. The works focus on track renewal around the Arena junction, including Harrington Road and Elmers End, and will run around the clock.
Replacement buses will link New Addington, Beckenham Junction, Elmers End and East Croydon. Walkers should note that access to Ryeland Field in South Norwood Country Park, the footpath crossing at Arena tram stop and the route across the tracks to Longheath Gardens will close, and the Croydon Arena car park will have limited access. Neighbours near the line can expect noisy works. Questions go to TfL on 0343 222 1234 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm).

💡 DID YOU KNOW? CROYDON HAD ONE OF BRITAIN'S FIRST ACCESS GUIDES
In May 1979, a campaign called Operation Crocus launched an accessibility guide to Croydon's public buildings, after years of surveys and fundraising through coffee mornings, dance nights and bring-and-buy sales. 3,000 copies were presented to the Mayor, priced at 75p each, making Croydon one of around 50 towns in the country with such a guide.
A driving force was Mary Care, a wheelchair user and Croydon Parish Church regular, whose scrapbooks of the campaign are now kept at Croydon Minster.
