Preview: Croydon considers GPS tagging for prolific shoplifters, Council Tax Support faces consultation, and your complete guide to Open House, live music, culture and community events.
Croydonβs weekend pulse is beating loudly, with safety, support, culture and community action all taking centre stage.
ποΈ SHOPLIFTING CRACKDOWN PILOT
Croydon Executive Mayor Jason Perry plans to launch a pilot scheme later in 2026 to electronically tag prolific shoplifters, which would make Croydon the first London borough to do so.
The proposed lightweight GPS ankle tags would be used through the police and local court system to monitor people banned from entering specific shopping areas. The approach was first introduced in East Sussex in 2025.
Sussex Police told the BBC that tags cost between Β£275 and Β£400 each, while its pilot was linked to 100 prevented shop thefts, estimated police savings of Β£5,600 and wider criminal justice savings of Β£28,300.
Croydon Council says reported town centre shop thefts fell from 5,043 to 4,796 over the past year. The mayor also points to live facial recognition cameras and a public space protection order, which he says reduced antisocial behaviour by 24% over three years.
Freshfields Market owner Ben Selvaratnam, also identified by the BBC as a co-founder of the Croydon Business Association, said his family run grocery experiences two or three incidents a day. He cautiously welcomed the proposal but warned: βThey just canβt be an expensive ankle bracelet.β
Councillor Janet Campbell said her Labour group supports tagging prolific offenders but wants more information about delivery, funding and the mayorβs powers.
The Metropolitan Police recorded 90,071 shoplifting offences in 2025/26, with 70% of its shoplifting investigations ending without a suspect identified. Croydon residents also gave mixed views, with some believing tags could deter theft while others questioned whether they would stop determined offenders or make shoppers feel less safe.
π· COUNCIL TAX SUPPORT CONSULTATION
Croydon Council is proposing a public consultation on possible changes to Council Tax Support for working age residents. Cabinet is due to consider the proposal next week.
Councils must review their Council Tax Support scheme every year. The Government has also directed Croydon to demonstrate that it is taking reasonable steps to improve its financial position, including reviewing significant spending within its control.
In 2025/26, around Β£39 million was awarded through the scheme, including approximately Β£25 million to working age residents. The council says Croydon provides substantial support and that its scheme costs more than those operated by many other London boroughs.
Under the proposal, possible changes could include reducing some levels of support, changing eligibility protections for certain working age residents and revising how income and savings are assessed.
Retaining the current arrangements remains one of the options under consideration. No decisions have been made.
Subject to Cabinet approval, a consultation could launch later in September 2026. Responses would help shape recommendations for possible changes from April 2027, with a final decision due at Full Council in February 2027.
Executive Mayor Jason Perry said the consultation would give residents βa genuine opportunity to shape future recommendationsβ, while stressing that the current scheme has not been changed.
